Similar to, new side missions can also be unlocked based on the friendship ratings between characters. Known as redux stages, these are the results of changing events in other battles. Though entirely optional, some characters can only be recruited by unlocking alternate versions of certain missions. Like, additional stages and characters become available by completing various scenarios presented within each chapter.
Stages are divided into two types: main story battles that are connected with one another chronologically (visually represented by a square on the stage list) and side battles that mostly exist outside the story branch (symbolized by a circle). Unlike in previous titles, the Story Mode of Warriors Orochi 3 follows the format in which faction stories are completely omitted in favor of a singular main story scenario told in a total of four chapter segments.
